Then and Now Experiences of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders

Overview

NHPI face many issues that impact their livelihood and civil rights in today's society. Learn about some of these issues and U.S. Government resources that provide additional resources, which may concern related topics on a given issue.

Educational Barriers

According to the National Center for Education Statistics for those not enrolled in school or did not earn a high-school credential, the dropout rates for 16- to 24-year-olds in 2021 are the following:

  • Asian (2.1%)
  • White (4.1%)
  • Two or more races (4.9%)
  • Black (5.9%)
  • Pacific Islander (7.6%)
  • Hispanic (7.8%)
  • American Indian/Alaska Native (10.2%)

Employment Discrimination

Looking at the 2022 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates for just the State of Hawaii regarding the unemployment rate for individuals 16 years and over, 

  • 8.30% NHPI (alone, not Hispanic or Latino)
  • 5.50% NHPI (alone, or in combination with one or more other races, not Hispanic or Latino)
  • 4.10% Hispanic or Latino (of any race)
  • 3.70% Two or more races, not Hispanic or Latino
  • 3.60% Not Hispanic or Latino
  • 3.50% White (alone, or in combination with one or more other races, not Hispanic or Latino)
  • 3.30% White (alone, not Hispanic or Latino)
  • 2.70% Asian (alone, or in combination with one or more other races, not Hispanic or Latino)
  • 2.40% Asian (alone, not Hispanic or Latino)

Hate Crimes

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Crime Data Explorer shows there are 196 reported Anti-NHPI hate crimes between 2012 and 2022. The top four types of offense were intimidation (34); simple assault (34); aggravated assault (28); and destruction, damage, or vandalism of property (19).

Health

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the negative factors regarding health for NHPI are “higher rates of smoking, alcohol consumption, and obesity” and “less access to cancer prevention and control programs” compared with the general U.S. population. “Some leading causes of death among Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders include: cancer, heart disease, unintentional injuries (accidents), stroke and diabetes” as well as “hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis."^
