Genealogy

Overview

For assistance with your research, contact your local library, U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) facilities, state archives, or Federal Depository Library. Experts can assist you with your genealogical questions. Below are some options to assist you in your research.

Research at NARA

The public can visit the research rooms of NARA's facilities by appointment only. For more information about each type of facility and location, click on the following links:

Research at State Archives

NARA maintains a List of State Archives, including: websites, mail and email addresses, and phone numbers.

Federal Depository Library Directory (FDLD)

Federal Depository Libraries provide access to Federal information in various formats (online, paper, microfiche, and more). While the information rarely includes personal names of use to genealogists, depository information can be used to help provide context about a time period, location, or topic. Consult with library staff about your specific interests or research needs.

Use the FDL Directory to find your nearest Federal Depository Library. Depositories are located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Federated States of Micronesia, and U.S. territories.
