The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) was created in 2003, when the Alcohol,Tobacco and Firearms was reorganized, as required by the Homeland Security Act of 2002. The mission of TTB is to collect alcohol, tobacco and ammunition excise taxes, protect consumers of alcoholic beverages through compliance of enforcement and education of the industry to ensure a regulated market place.
Even though the TTB is a relatively new federal agency, the Treasury Department has long history . It was the Treasury under Alexander Hamilton who used these taxes to pay off Revolutionary War Debt.
