The Internal Revenue Service is a branch of the Department of the U.S. Treasury. It has the responsibility of collecting and processing federal tax returns. Its mission is to assist American taxpayers to understand and meet their tax obligations. The duties of the IRS are defined r under section 7801 of the Internal Revenue Code. The Treasury Secretary has full authority to administer and enforce the internal revenue laws and has the power to create an agency to enforce these laws.
